First Stop: The Maid of the Mist
The falls themselves are the star of the show on this tour, but they’re so big that you can’t truly appreciate them unless you see them from every angle. That starts with a breathtaking panoramic view while you’re enjoying lunch. That’s the first place you’ll go after arriving at your destination.
After lunch, it’s time to get on board one of the longest-tenured and hardest-working ferry services in the world, the Maid of the Mist. It’s one thing to see Niagara Falls; it’s quite another to feel the spray on your face and hands. The Maid of the Mist has been offering that experience to visitors since the first boat went out in 1846. The ferry will sail deep into Horseshoe Falls so you can see, hear and feel the raw power of the Falls up close and personal.
Please note that the Maid of the Mist is only available between May and October, so if you’re visiting outside of this period your experience will be a little different. Instead of riding the ferry, you’ll board the ‘Journey Behind the Falls,’ which does exactly what it sounds like. An elevator will raise you up and behind the cascade of water, giving you a unique perspective of the fifty-meter sheer drop, and the deafening roar of 160,000 square meters of water thundering past your head every minute.
Onto The Falls
The Falls are divided up into three sections: The Bridal Veil Falls, the Horseshoe Falls, and the Canadian Falls. There’s also the famous Niagara Whirlpool, and that’s also included on the tour. While moving from position to position to see the Falls from all angles, you’ll step between two countries. The Niagara Falls are so enormous that part of them is in the USA, and the other part is in Canada. You’ll see it from both nations, so you’ll get the full picture.
This is a highly popular tourist attraction, so do be aware that it may be crowded. Weekday trips are usually quieter than weekends, but whenever you decide to visit, you’ll still receive the full tour. The Maid of the Mist is an excellent way to see the Falls in warmer weather, but visitors in winter will be glad they’re safely inside the warmth of the elevator.
