It’s been said many times by many people that Madison Square Garden is the most famous sporting arena in the world. Other venues such as London’s Wembley Stadium may disagree with that, but there’s no denying that it belongs in the conversation. Many old boxers and boxing coaches will tell you that no matter what a young fighter has achieved, they’re nothing until they’ve walked out at ‘the Garden’.
Despite its history and its worldwide reputation for creating a ‘big fight feel,’ Madison Square Garden holds only 20,000 people; intimate compared to some of the more recent sporting theaters that have been built since it opened in 1968. The New York Knicks and the Rangers still call it home, making it the city’s go-to venue for basketball and hockey, but those who don’t follow sport are more likely to have come here to see concerts and tours. As with boxers, most singers and performers grow up dreaming of appearing here.
As everybody who’s anybody in both entertainment and sport has appeared here in the past fifty years, the guided tour is well worth checking out. As well as providing access to the hidden depths of the arena, it also takes in memorabilia and exhibits from the past that you won’t see anywhere else, before finishing up in the famous arena bowl itself.
